Foothills Market will be open for ordering on a special Thanksgiving schedule this week, from now until Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., with pickup on Wednesday from 4:30-5:30 p.m.

It’s not too early to start thinking about your plans for Thanksgiving! Let Foothills Market help! We have a variety of items that would make great side dishes, like roasted butternut squash, green beans, or some greens like collards or kale. We also have sweets that can round out the meal, whether you are looking for a sweet spread to go on your dinner rolls or something like cookies or a quick bread for another dessert option to go with your pumpkin pie. Speaking of pumpkins, we have some if you’d like to try your hand at making a pie with fresh, roasted pumpkin rather than from a can!

It’s that time of year – the weather forecast is calling for the first freeze of the season. You may see some new items on Foothills Market this week. Some of them may be the result of the farmers busily stripping any edible fruit from plants before the cold weather kills them. Even if these fruit are small or “baby”-sized, they are still good eating! It’s a last chance to eat certain locally-grown veggies fresh for the season.

As all our growers on Foothills Market have found, sometimes the plans you make for your garden just don’t work out. That happened this year for Happy Horseshoe Farm and our sweet potato crop. We had two rows with beautiful, lush vines, and we were excited to see the potatoes beneath. But when we dug the potatoes a week or so ago, we found that a big percentage of the potatoes had split and are not suitable for selling. What a disappointment!
But to paraphrase the saying, “When life gives you split sweet potatoes, make sweet potato breads!” This week, we are offering a selection of items on the market that feature sweet potatoes, ranging from a rich sweet potato-cinnamon bread to decadent sweet potato mini-muffins to light sweet potato biscuits.
